I have an electronics background, and this book is well written and most informative. There is no single book that a vintage-radio hobbyist or enthusiast can claim is the "best," but this book is certainly one of the best. It's nice when an author like Mr. Corbin who has so much knowledge takes the time to put it down in writing so that it can be shared with others.
At first I was hesitant in purchasing ARR&R because the book was spiral bound book. I am so happy I did buy it because it is EXCELLENT! Where other books give explanations and directions, assuming the reader already understands certain procedures or elements of electronics, Mr. Corbin does an outstanding job of explaining not only radio restoration, but the electronics that's involved in easy to understand language without talking down to the reader or overestimating their background knowledge. Wonderful definitions and simple, yet complete explanations make you feel like you're sitting down with a good friend that's telling you about his beloved hobby. It's not a stiff, class text book. It's a well done book with large type that's easy on your eyes and the brain cells! I'd love to see it in hardback or even a nice paperback if a fifth edition comes out.
Well written and easy to understand if you commit the time to it. There is a lot of material here. I recently got into repairing old radios and this helped with understanding them better. I purchased 4 books on the subject and hit the library. This was the most useful to help teach me how they work. I do wish it had a wire spiral binding rather than the plastic though.
Getting ready to retire and am looking for something to keep me busy, what could be more fun than tinkering around with those old, classic radio beauties? I was looking for a book for the complete beginner, I'm no dummy but by page 50 my head was hurting. So this book did not suit me well but I'm sure I can use it as a reference guide once I build up knowledge. Great for those with a background in electronics, but if you are just starting out I would recommend something else.
Enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who's considering working on these old tube radios, either for themselves or perhaps for others as well. Mr. Corbin is doubtlessly qualified and has put together a book that will be beneficial in many ways. Some things seem to get repeated several times, but that may be an intentional move to reinforce important points. In addition, I found an occasional mistake in one or two of the schematics, but nothing that would impede learning from this otherwise well done volume.
This was a good refresher of what I learned in Radio/TV Shop in the 60's. The author should really think about reviewing the content for typos and errors. The references to schematics were lacking and a lot of schematics were unreadable. I would recommend this to others though.
Good stuff in here. Just that it needs more detail. I'm trying to find books from the experienced restorer on how to start, what to expect, and how to start with a walk-through to the polished case. Didn't quite find it in this book though.
The title and description of this book are most misleading. Instead of a how-to, the author spends most of his pages on basic theory and test equipment. He even covers transistors, although they didn't appear until the last years of his 1920-1960 coverage. Oddly, he covered the "AA5" radios in-depth, but barely mentioned the TRF as a design choice. Most folks I know think to the Atwater Kents, Crosleys, and RCA Radiola as antique radio examples - but not this author. Sad. Almost four pages are devoted to 'Cosmetic Repairs', with a third of that spent admonishing the reader to not pull a vacuum tube out of it's socket by the envelope. All in all, a disappointing book and I wish I had my $ back! I thought it was in poor taste to include a folded sheet of the author's available restoration services, including prices, in the book!edit 1-12-17. Amazon credited my CC, but did not send me a return label. When contacted by phone, and yes, you can talk to a CS person at Amazon by phone, I was told to "do with it what I wanted to". Due to their refund, I improved the product rating to thee stars - again, mainly due to Amazon's refund.
