Buddhism teaches us that wanting or desire is the cause of evil, and Zen teaches that unrestrained pursuit lies at the root of our troubles. It seems natural then, that musicianship should be a fruitful field in which to apply zen buddhism. After all, physical exertion is rarely helpful when attempting to play better music, and as Kenny Werner illustrates in Effortless Mastery, it can be counterproductive. He applies zen principles to musicianship, where the primary message is: you have a good musician inside yourself, who will emerge if you remove obstacles that are constructed when you try too hard. In other words, get out of your own way.Werner approaches the paradox that is zen in a practical way. How do you achieve your goals without striving for them? He doesn't advocate eliminating goals. Instead he finds productive ways to achieve them while avoiding the pitfalls that come from exerting the wrong kind of effort. While primarily geared toward the improvising musician, his principles can also be applied when trying to master previously written music. He walks a fine line between the practicality of improving one's musicianship and the new age thought that may turn off many readers, but he successfully reaches a balance by consistently focusing on the needs of the musician and providing genuinely useful advice.
There is some important material here, but unfortunately it is wrapped in a cloak of mysticism intended to awe the reader supposedly providing secret eastern knowledge to obtain musical nirvana. Really is a pity because the author has some very good points and ideas. It is no secret that relaxation, and mindful meditation practices are beneficial to performance, learning and quieting the spirit. The core message of this book is very simple and certainly not new. It is summed up in the saying, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." Perfect practice combined with increased concentration yield a greater awareness of what you are playing, and eventually, mastery.Chapter 13 is where the first valuable information actually turns up in the book. A few more chapters after that but the majority is filler. The author makes a comment about eastern vs western teachers. Eastern teachers are masters. Western teachers are frequently not. Such a claim is strangely prophetic. Mr. Werner is clearly not a master of zen or eastern philosophy. Nearly everything he writes about it has the dialog, but neither the soul or the understanding. And that was the biggest detraction for me.I'm keeping the book and will adopt some of the ideas to be found here. But far too much of the book was pseudo-intellectual nonsense IMO.
Because I was blown away by Victor Wooten's "The Music Lesson" Amazon suggested I might like this book. They were right. Not only is this author a prolific recording artist, band leader and composer, he is side-man to some other, world class artists as well. He knows what runs thru an artist's mind and how people behave and addresses it in this no-nonsense book, which also comes with a CD of meditations to help you implement some of what he's talking about in the text. What he's saying isn't new, he uses quotes from other great teachers, players and thinkers to illustrate his points. All of it is good and inspiring. I'm practicing more, thanks to Kenny.
The truth found in this book is the reality and "how to" of all the great artists I have worked with, whether they are consciously aware of it or not. The contents of this book have to be realized by any artist, sooner or later.Musicians without this inner reality and stance are not yet artists. They may be on their way; They may be extremely technical craftsmen, but they lack the magic and the inspiration of true art. True art is not an egotistical exercise in showcasing technical skill for the sake of impressing an audience or colleagues (note: they wont be impressed if the motivation is ego..only if it is dictated by music herself!), or flaunting knowledge, artificial complexity, contrived simplicity and catering to the egos' demands for attention. The public can subconsciously tell if you have become music or not. Your ego can't hide anywhere in the performing arts while performing. Offstage you can get away with much egotism if you so desire, but not during union with music...A week ago I was thanking an old buddy of mine for his solos on 2 projects of mine. He is now one of the world's greatest new jazz bass players. I was telling him how the book was entirely "dead-on" according to my professional experience, which allows me the great good fortune of playing with some of he world's greatest musicians and discuss our musical experiences. He immediately jumped-in and said: " I have the book! I have read it several times".This artist was already so in tune with his inner being when I met him in a music store long ago on the strength of ONE note with a gliss he played, which attracted my attention instantly!. It is a testimony to the depth and down to earth practical scope of this book that he has found additional key information to further grow his mastery to the point of at which it is today. For me there are also additional insights and realizations to absorb and practice as one's road in music lifelong. Remember: We all get beter with time. Even mozart did!.I highly recommend this fantastic practical guide to your inner genius. Genius is genius, not average common-sense, so be prepared to abandon many of your old presuppositions and ineffective beliefs that you think are valid...They don't work in a state of mastery and inspiration. What Kenny Werner teaches in a very practical step by step manner does!
I don't really go for all the zen stuff, but if you suspend judgment on that, there is a lot in this book about how to play music for mastery, not just superficial competence. No, you don't really have to start by just playing a single note on your instrument (as he recommends). His basic point is just that you should start from what you can play PERFECTLY, and don't move on to more and bigger chunks until perfection is achieved. If you really dig down into his recommendations, and make a sincere effort to follow them for at least part of your practice, it will definitely improve your playing.
